Wish list

I am getting pretty bummed out about how I don't use cloth diapers anymore.

Although my current fantasy item that I pretend I am saving up for is this stroller, (Santa?? Anyone?? PLEASE???) what I really would do with a couple hundred bucks is buy some nice fluffy soft wonderful cloth diapers for baby Charlie.

I used cloth from fall 2000 with baby Mickey until 2004/early 2005 when Casey outgrew what we had, and I was pretty wiped out being pregnant with Charlie and babysitting and homeschooling somehow while puking my guts out (even took myself to the good old hospital at 9 weeks for the always fun hyperemesis for a night of IV fluids and phenergan) I just dropped out of the cloth-diapering-a-toddler realm and never got back full time. In a lifestlye where things like hearing the wrong commercials or smelling chapsticks sent me running to vomit my eyes out, I wasn't about to haul pails of poop and pee out to the laundry room every day...sorry but true.

We had some Fuzzi Bunz for Charlie but they were used, and they were size medium and they only fit him for a few weeks and the previous owner didn't take good care of them and so they weren't absorbent and they smelled funky and I think I ruined their absorbency even further by trying so many methods of deodorizing them :(

But now I miss it and I feel so badly that we have 8 bucks every Friday for new disposables but not 2 or 3 hundred for a decent set of cloth diapes for the dear baby.

I have no groundbreaking comments, just a resounding, "Yeah, me too, me too!" =)

Okay, brainstorming for you here...
How about making an ultra-cheap stash from recycled materials (ie, old t-shirts or towels from thrift stores)? Your kids could participate as a homeschool project in cutting out stuff...you could do wool diaper covers made from thrift store sweaters...Do you have any sewing skills? A machine &/or serger (or one you could borrow?)

Fern & Faerie has some great suggestions on frugal diaper sewing.

Okay, I guess it's really time to learn to knit :-) I've seen plenty of free patterns for wool soakers. Of course, wool yarn ain't so cheap either! But I'll bet you could whip up several from a ball of yarn -- and you'd look so chic while knitting them up :-)

I am knitting illiterate myself. I can sew up a storm, but am helpless with yarn-related-stuff. I did learn how to crochet enough to make a few scarves & hats but the results were less than satisfactory. Ah well...

i get why you feel bad about this, but quit being so hard on yourself! it's much easier to come up 8$ a week, than to pull 200$ o/o your hat!

What about a dozen prefolds for something like, oh, $25 and a couple of Bummis Super Whisper Wraps? Then the next payday, a dozen more and 2 more covers? This is my method and I LOVE it. When money grows on trees, I sometimes buy a Bum Genius One Size because I love them so much.

You know what, I used to LOVE bummis super whisper wraps! Not a bad idea at all...

there are SO many websites and dipes out there now that I felt a bit overwhelmed at the prospect of going back there, too.

Somehow financially it seemed easier to just throw a pack of Pampers in with the groceries, too, rather than make a seperate purchase online--sounds dumb when I type it.

I think I will be able to do this soon. Thanks guys!!!

Have you ever considered G-diapers? Literally as convenient as disposable because the liners are, however better for the environment because they decompose in about a months time? I am seriously considering using them if I get to have another munckin.

I have a question/comment about G-diapers--they seem like the worst of both worlds because they're expensive (each cover is around $17, and then you also have to buy the disposable liners at $52-60 for a pack of 160. An acquaintance of mine who uses them says it costs her close to 50 cents per diaper!

So it's more expensive than disposables, and still more work because you have to wash the covers (I'm assuming) and you also have to swish the liners around until disintegrate enough to flush.

So anyone had experience with them? They just don't seem that practical, but maybe I'm missing something...

I certainly understand about the money not growing on trees thing. Ah, life as an independent (with your spouse, of course) adult. Ain't it great!

They seem kind of dumb, I must admit.

I bought some brand new medium Fuzzi Bunz. They fit my 3 month old and my 31 month old. You can get about 12, brand new, for $200.I hope you can get enough money for some!
