Wash a day

These are some cute ideas from another mama of many, on that ole timeless subject of LAUNDRY. Now that we have a washer and dryer in our kitchen because our teeny little housey does not have a basement, this issue has come to the forefront. Mostly, I have done well, but we have not gotten to the place where there is some rockin' "system" yet. This past Saturday we had a huge folding freak out but already the clean mountain is back. Anyone wish to share their laundry tales? Right now we have a few hampers, I run the wash almost constantly, and when it is clean, it gets whipped into my room. Just being honest!

I. hate. laundry. I gather it. My husband does it. I bring it up from the basement and it sits in the basket until I fold it. Usually I unload it onto my bed in preparation for folding 3-4 times then I finally drag it in front of the TV and fold it all while yelling at ds1 and the dog to not knock over my piles. Then it sits, folded, in the basket some more until I actually put it away 4-5 days later. We have 4 giant laundry baskets. This is not an effective system.

A dear friend who has four kids (and cloth diped two at a time because they were so close together!) did this:

1. Every night one big load goes in the wash just before bed.
2. In the morning before breakfast all clothes go in the dryer.
3. After breakfast dishes are cleared away, everyone who can walk helps fold and put away the one load of laundry, which takes about five minutes. Laundry is DONE by 9:00 at the latest. Awesome.

I don't have nearly as much of it, but I loooove laundry. I can't explain it. It's a very zen activity for me. I don't have a system, but it gets done because I like it. I do get the clean pile that lives in our bedroom, but for the most part I can stay on top of it. I fold and hang at night as a weird kind of guilty pleasure.

Dishes, on the other hand, don't get me started. It's always a disaster, always. And if I manage to get them all done, my husband decides to cook some elaborate, wonderful meal that uses up every dish in the kitchen all over again.

I like to fold laundry (and especially diapers) while watching TV at night or listening to a podcast. That way, I can get something done and enjoy guilt-free entertainment at the same time.

I love the idea of the right after breakfast you all have to put laundry away...for us we do more than one load a day so we would have to toailor it, but i get it. I am going to start this right away.

Also, the idea that you fold in front of tv at night is what we alwasy did...when we dont have a little nursling whom i have to hold at night. Or when i am not pregnant and cant sit too well by the end of the day...so for me, not being pregnant or having a little in arms beebee hasnt been too often. My husband and kids will have to step it up.

We have one child who has all their clothes hung up except for a socks-n-undies box. This helps him because he suffers greatly from fake-cant-fold disease.
